Effective thermal management is critical in EVs as high temperatures can shorten lifespan, cause battery cell damage, and in extreme cases, lead to thermal runaway. Thermal simulations are an essential tool for determining the optimal cooling system design, as they are the fastest and most cost-effective method for predicting and preventing such destructive events. Therefore, OEMs require reliable simulations that demonstrate adequate cooling capabilities of the system and guarantee mechanisms for avoiding thermal runaway propagation. These concerns are mainly related to battery systems, which is one of the primary focuses in Rimac Technology simulation department. We leverage our deep knowledge of detailed battery cell mechanics and battery cell models of differing complexity like equivalent circuit model (ECM) and electrochemical models to determine precise heat generation. Additionally, we develop cooling systems for various components such as e-axles (electric motors, power electronics), ECUs, and power distribution units (PDUs).
